CHAPTER SIX

Later that night, Zeke decided to sit out on the back porch with his parents in the rocking chairs they had made at their family’s furniture factory. The smell of fresh-cut grass wafted through the evening air. Even though they probably wouldn’t have snow for a few months, the grass didn’t grow very quickly in the fall, so there was no need to cut it again until spring. He’d miss all the fresh, clean air aromas, but welkumed the tradeoff for firewood burning, and hot cocoa.

“You look deep in thought, Zeke. Is something on your mind?” Daed took a sip of his kaffi, studying him over the rim.

“I was thinking, you are a bit shorthanded down at the store, Mamm?”

She looked up from her knitting. “Thinking of volunteering or did you have someone in mind?”

“You know me well.” Zeke smiled. “I was talking with Daniel and Miriam Graber at Jebediah’s wedding and they mentioned things have been a bit rough the past couple years. Seeing as how Daniel and I have been friends since we were kinner, I thought it might be nice to help them out. Miriam is pleasant and would be great with the Englischers who come into the store.”

Mamm stared at him a couple moments before she went back to knitting. He wondered if she were going to answer. She chewed on her top lip, something she often did when contemplating a response. “Are you taking a liking to this maedel?”

“I have always liked her, since we were kinner.” Zeke allowed his kaffi mug to warm his hands. He took a sip.

Mamm nodded. “And are you okay with raising her bu as your own?”

Zeke nearly spewed the hot liquid from his mouth. He swallowed hard and coughed.

“Look what you’ve gone and done.” Daed patted him on the back. “You flustered the poor bu.”

“It’s not that.” Zeke struggled to regain his composure. He wiped his mouth with his hand. “It turns out, David is my bu.”

Mamm’s hands stopped knitting. Both of his parents gaped at him.

“I didn’t know until Jebediah and Eliza’s wedding.” It wasn’t the way one normally wanted to tell their parents they were a grossdaedi and grossmammi. “Miriam didn’t want me to come back only because she was going to have our boppli. If I had known...” His voice lowered to barely above a whisper, “I would have come back.”

“And now that you are,” Daed asked, “do you intend to do right by her and David?”

“Ach, I wish it were that simple.” Zeke let out a heavy sigh. “I’d like nothing more, but Miriam doesn’t trust me. She knows I dated Englischers. I told her I only went out with someone else because I was upset that she left, but it doesn’t matter. I did wrong and she’s not likely to ever forgive me.”

“Perhaps if she works at the store, she will get a chance to get better acquainted with us and she will see that your heart is sincere.” Mamm took back up her knitting.
